Odor Free Corporate Hog Farming

An impressive, scientifically sound program for the treatment of noxious lagoon odor for commercial hog farm operations is finally here!

HOG WASH™ has come to the rescue at a time of heightened private and public concern across the Midwest concerning hog farm operations. Yes, this innovative technology is exceeding expectations and setting anew standard for the hog farming industry.

HOG WASH™ is a hog farm effluent management program that uses a cultured biomass which digests the hog manure and urine. The program applies pH control, lagoon detoxification, introduction of a harmless proprietary bacterial culture, and regular monitoring to keep the newly generated biomass in peak condition.

The result of the HOG WASH™ program is a great reduction in odor from the lagoons and barns, the removal of lagoon crust and manure build-up in the barns with a vast reduction in flies and gnats, and an effluent which is odor-free and has a greatly improved nutrient value.

Luthi Family Farms in Fargo, Oklahoma (operation size: 3,650 sows) has been using the HOG WASH™ program for over a year and has observed some tremendous results:

  • a reduction in the severity of E. coli scours which has resulted in a lower scours pre-wean mortality rate.
  • an increase of up to 6% in weight gain on weaned pigs.
  • the removal of manure buildup in the hog barns and crust from the lagoon.
  • removal of noxious odor from the barns and the lagoons.
  • increased productivity from land applied effluent.

The red-colored effluent is odor-free, has an enhanced nutrient value from nitrogen fixation and contains bacteria normally found in the soil, and which continue to work in the humus after land application.

When tested by Techrad Laboratories in Oklahoma City, the level of, organic nitrogen in the HOG WASH™ treated effluent was found to be of greater benefit to crops, following land application.

Effluent Waste Management Lagoon Treatment in progressOwners Chuck and Wathina Luthi advised that in a recent trial, a field on their property that was unfertilized produced 12 bushels of wheat per acre. A field where they had applied a commercial fertilizer produced 21 bushels per acre, and a field where the HOG WASH™ treated effluent had been applied produced 45 bushels per acre.

Water well driller, Phillip Howard, of Howard Drilling Company, in Beaver, Oklahoma has drilled most of the water wells for hog farms in the NW Oklahoma and panhandle area. He said of his last visit to Luthi Farms, "One was down wind and did not get an offensive odor from the lagoons or the barn exhausts. I couldn't smell anything".

The cost of the program? A matter of cents per hog produced which is more than offset by the productivity gains.

Luthi Hog Farm Effluent Water Treatment Testimonial
Chuck and Wathina Luthi

"My main concern was the odor of the lagoons, and over the course of time, we have seen a drastic change in color in our 2nd stage that happened last year, and after the warm weather set in this year, it turned red pretty quick. Of course, after that the odor went down tremendously. What we're seeing now in our first stage lagoon is a color change, and right along with that, a reduction in surface build-up of crust and a reduction in odor which is pleasing."
